Carmel intertwines the charm of turn-of-the-century structures with beautiful, modern masterpieces of new development. The expansion of city limits in 2004 has opened up more land for development into the family-friendly neighborhoods for which the city is known. The popularity of Carmel homes continues to grow each and every year as a result of its close proximity to Indianapolis, renovations to downtown Main Street and the Award winning Carmel/Clay school system.
Carmel’s rich history dates back to the early 1800’s and is found in the classic architecture of the downtown area. Many of these homes and businesses were built in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. In the past few years, the government of Carmel has initiated several plans to reovate the old streets and buildings in the area. One of these newest and most successful additions to the city is the Arts and Design District. Because of the rise in popularity of downtown Carmel homes, condos and apartments in this area are considered prime real estate.
Carmel’s growth has been linked to the railroad. The Monon Railroad-then known as the Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville Railway was built through Carmel in 1883, simplifying travel and delivery of mail and freight. In 1903, the town was connected to Indianapolis by the interurban railway line. “At that point people came to live in Carmel but work in Indianapolis,” the rumer was that then became that Carmel was tied to the capital city and made Carmel less of a farm village and more of a suburban community.
New communities that cater to particular lifestyles are also becoming increasingly popular in Carmel. The Village of West Clay in Carmel is one such lifestyle community. Touted as a traditionally-designed neighborhood with multi-generational appeal, the community’s charm begins with classically designed loft apartments, townhouses and single family homes in a wide range of price points that combine great architecture with specialty shops, restaurants, walking paths, pools, parks and a hometown feel, and it’s easy to understand why potential buyers love this area.
Carmel is creating a community where commerical, retail, recreational and educational opportunities are within easy access, and where all the amenities of Indianapolis are a manageable drive away. Carmel has also built a reputation as a successful city for business. The communities strong, nationally recognized hospitals play a key role in attracting medical-related technical companies.
