Westfield was founded on May 6, 1834 by Asa Bales, Ambrose Osborne and Simon Moon, and Simon Barker all Quakers from North Carolina. It is believed that the town was planned as a stop on the Underground Railroad with many families of the Quaker and Wesleyan Methodist churches supporting the cause. When the laws against aiding escaped slaves were harshened, part of the Westfield Quakers split into the Anti-Slavery Friends meeting Westfield downtown.

On January 1, 2008, the town of Westfield incorporated into a city with Andy Cook sworn in as the new mayor With recent annexations in the southern part of its containing township (Washington Township) and rapid population growth in areas already occupied by the pre-existing town, the city government estimates Westfield’s population to be at roughly 24,000 residents.
