PARKS AND RECREATIONAL FACILITIES:
Asa Bales Park is located in downtown Westfield running north and south beginning at the Westfield High School on Hoover Street and extending south to SR 32. This park currently has youth playground equipment at the north and south ends and a picnic shelter on the north end by Hoover Street. The entire park has a paved asphalt trail system that travels from Hoover Street on the north to SR 32 on the south. This park will have significant new park amenities constructed during the 2005-2006 timeframe as a result of a city bond that was approved in 2005. This park land was established in 1997.
Freedom Trail Park is located just to the west of the Washington Woods Elementary school which is located on Grassy Branch Road in Westfield. The main entrance to the park is off of Deer Walk Trace which is accessed off of East Street. This park is primarily planned for youth sports fields for active sport participation. This park land was established in 2005.
Hadley Park is located at the corner of SR 32 and Union Street in downtown Westfield. This park is dedicated to Roy Hadley, a lifelong resident of Westfield, and is used for a quiet stop and rest area for local residents. The flower gardens in the park are maintained by the Hamilton County Master Gardeners. This park land was established in 1994.
The Monon Trail extension into Washington Township has received an initial grant to provide the first mile of construction. This will take place in 2007. We have actively sought an additional grant to allow for the continued construction of an additional mile during that same time frame. Master Planning has been completed with consultant Butler, Fairman, and Seufert for the entire Monon and Midland Trails through Washington Township.
The Midland Trail that runs east and west through Westfield is also a priority and, where possible, developers are helping us build this east west amenity. The Midland Trail will travel directly through the downtown area adjacent to the Martha Doan Memorial Gardens and then travel eastward along the northern border of the Simon Moon Park. It will continue eastward along the southern edge of the Westfield Market Place to our eastern most border at Gray Road.
The Natalie Wheeler Trail is an asphalt trail that is located on South Union Street and connects the downtown area of Westfield with the Hamilton County Cool Creek Park located on 151st Street. This trail was completed in 2004.
Quaker Park is located off of SR 32 south of the city’s Public Safety Building which is located on SR 32 at Dartown Road. This park currently has youth playground equipment and a shelter for picnicking. A portion of the future Midland Trail is constructed through Quaker Park and will become part of the extended Midland Trail that will join the Monon to the east and extend westward toward the Boone County Line. This park will have significant new park amenities constructed during the 2005-2006 timeframe as a result of a town bond that was approved in 2005. This park land was established in 1997.
Simon Moon Park is located adjacent to our Westfield Public Works Department on 171st street between Carey Road and South Union Street. This park will be developed as an active park with playing fields and pavilions for picnicking and family activities. There is currently play equipment at the far west end of the park for both toddlers and younger children and a pavilion for picnicking. This park will be adjacent and accessible to the Midland Trail that is on the northern border of this property. This Midland Trail will eventually be built and extend to Noblesville on the East and to the Monon Trail to the west. This park land was established in 1999.
FUTURE PARKS AND RECREATION FACILIITES
(Richardson’s Prairie)
This passive parkland is located at the southeast corner of 161st street and South Union Street in Westfield. This land is adjacent to cool creek and will be used as a living classroom for students to experience the effects of nature on prairie grasses and other living trees and grasses. This park land was established in 2002.
(Yet to be named)
This land which is part of the Countryside subdivision will be developed as sport fields for the youth of Westfield. This park land was established in 2005.
(Yet to be named)
This land which is part of the Maple Knoll subdivision will be developed as sport fields for the youth of Westfield. This park land will be established in 2006.
These 17 acres of land on Little Eagle Creek Avenue, south of 166th street, were donated to the city of Westfield by the Wilfong Foundation in January of 2003. The land is situated at the intersection of a small creek which feeds into Little Eagle Creek. It lies in the path of our future trails that will travel along Little Eagle Creek. As our trail system is developed over the years this parcel will fit nicely into our overall program. This future park will be developed as a passive park.
